In 1985, the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA) was formed to support the use of acupuncture in the treatment of drug dependent persons in a variety of clinical settings.

At SCI, the five-point NADA protocol for five-point auricular acupuncture has been used with favorable results. In 2006, 243 men received acupuncture. The NADA protocol assists in the recovery process by helping to provide relief of withdrawal symptoms and cravings, as well as to promote general relaxation and homeostasis. Acupuncture works in conjunction with the counseling process. An overwhelming number of SCI participants report less frequent and less intense cravings after receiving acupuncture. Many others report feeling more calm, less anxious, and more at ease as a result of regular participation in acupuncture sessions, which are held two to three times weekly at SCI. In essence, this procedure facilitates the treatment process.
